Resembling a Roman temple. it was built in the style of Neoclassicism between 1774 and 1784 by architect Jean-François Chalgrin best known for his design of the Arc de Triomphe .

Built on the site of a destroyed chapel in 1739, the Eglise Saint-Philippe-du-Roule came from the wishes of Louis XV who wanted to give back a sanctuary to the district.
